BAR 2024 #11 – Laura Sam

Since 2012, as part of its grants and residency programmes, Bitamine it has been organising an annual selection process for an artist for the development and execution of a research and artistic production project. The interest of the programme lies in generating a result that stimulates reflection and the integration of the different perspectives that are produced in/from the margins.

The aim of this programme is to encourage research and the production of artistic projects related to the problems of the margin, promoting the mobility of artists and the development of projects, with a special focus on the legacy consisting of this publication that summarises the results of the research carried out during the residency.

In the past, wisdom was passed down orally from generation to generation. These moments, in addition to generating knowledge, were part of a ritual that was engraved in memory to be passed on to future generations.

When the word interacts with the body and bodies of other people – their voices, memories, longings, music and gestures – a new language is generated that, in a way, recreates a ceremony where multiple voices create a new score.

This essay brings together the most important milestones of the research work carried out by Laura Sam in the framework of the BAR #11 programme, together with those who accompanied her on her journey. Through these pages, you will be able to read, listen and imagine what that ritual was like, which lives on in our memory thanks to the compilation of oral accounts on the banks of the Bidasoa.
